Cream of wheat is also known as semolina in the UK and Sooji in India, here in North America, we either eat cooked or instant from the packets.

Grits is also known in other countrys, like Polenta in the spanish countrys Masa.

In the US they prefer the white type, were in most other country's it is the yellow variety. I was a chef and worked in Canada and other countrys, places like Jamaica they use it in Johnnycake a bread like cake for soaking up the gravys from currys and other stew like dishes.

I buy white cornmeal in Toronto, even though I have heard from people we do not have it here, but in the Portuguese area they sell it as with both there and the Brazilian cornbread, a yeast product is made with it. I is not as coarse as the grits in the U.S, so that is why some people do not like it for a breakfast or side dish item.

Well, grits is usually homemade and the grains are more visible. It's kind of pasty and looks like oatmeal, only instead of the chunky oats you have grainy grains.
Cream of Wheat is store bought and is thicker, smoother and more blended together, so you can't really see the grains.
