We are having a bbq and are inviting around 30 people. We would like to ask people to bring side dishes, but I think it will be a little much with 30 people bringing them.

Do you think that a lot of guests would just offer to bring something even if we don't write anything in the invitation? We know everyone equally well, so I feel strange asking just a select few to bring something...

Thanks!

some people will offer and some will arrive with their hats in their hands.
if it`s 15 couples then 15 side dishes wouldn`t be to much

Ask people to bring something and when they RSVP you can see what you need. Also, you can list things you'd like - salads, drinks, chips... etc.

In terms of how much, it's unreasonable to expect them to bring enough for 30 people. I usually ask people to bring enough for 5 to 10 people... just depends upon the dish.
For example, a bowl of potato salad will feed a lot of people, but if someone made deviled eggs it's would be reasonable to cook a dozen eggs (instead of 5 or 6).

Also, some people just have a special dish they like to share so you can let those folks do what they want. They usually end up making a lot.

You could put something on the invitation like "if you have a signature dish you'd like to share, please do so!"

there are always people who will never think to ask if they can bring anything. So you could just hope that some will offer and some won't and then you won't have too much.

If you want everyone to bring something, make sure they know in advance that it's a potluck BBQ. I would not just ask a few. Most polite people will ask if they can bring something.

You could ask some to bring puddings (never have too many of those), salads, bread, wine, beer, crisps etc.
Are the 30 people in groups or singles?

Yeah, you don't want 30 bowls of potato salad (or do you? :))
When people RSVP, they will usually ask if they can bring something, so then you can choose who you want to have bring something. Some people will offer to bring drinks instead, or desserts too.
Can I come? What can I bring? :)
