That's not true. Be sure when you go to the tatoo parlor that you check and make sure they have an autoclave (which sterilizes instruments) and notifiy them that you are diabetic because this puts you at a slightly higher risk for bleeding. That doesn't mean you can't get a tattoo, it's just something they should be aware of.

you can get a tattoo - ya just need to be extra carefull to keep it clean etc. while it's healing as you might be more at risk of it getting infected. Some places might not do it for you if you tell them ya have diabetes though so mbe keep it quiet! Ya should join a group called "insulin - all the cool kids are doin it" on facebook.com (join facebook 1st!) - there's heaps of people on there who've had tatoos sayin "diabetic" etc. - they look really cool - i'm thinkin of gettin one! they'd prob be the best people to ask. Good luck with it! :) xxxx

Your father's friend is mistaken.

There is absolutely no reason why a diabetic can't have a tattoo.

What you must bear in mind is that, being diabetic, the healing is compromised, so it may take longer for the wound to heal. This, in itself, may leave you open to opportunistic organisms which can cause infections. You may notice that your blood sugars raise for a while, which, in turn, might mean that you'll need to increase your insulin or tablets. Do check with your GP, however, before you make any changes and go along with his/her guidance.

You can, but you will have to be careful that the parlour is ultra clean and that you keep the area very clean after the tattoo is done. Diabetics are more prone to infections so you need to take care.

Well, no alarms will go off if you do, but you are putting yourself at much greater risk than a person without diabetes, which is quite a bit to begin with. You are much more likely to develop a disfiguring or even fatal infection.

How about trying one of those temporary henna tattoos instead?

i am diabetic too and it is true you need to be more careful but that does not mean that you cannot get one. You must make sure they have clean instruments and that it is safe instruments.
