Disclaimer! No offense to vegetarians. This is an honest question. Why do vegetarians eat mock meat (mock duck, mock fish, mock chicken - you get the drift - made with gluten or tofu)?

Aren't vegetarians suppose to be vegetarians because they don't want to kill animals, whether due to religious or personal reasons? So why do they still eat mock meat?

That's an interesting question. I think most people go vegetarian because they don't want to support animal cruelty, not because they hate the taste of meat. Mock meats mimic the taste of meat but don't involve slaughtering animals alive while they're fully conscious. They make the transition to vegetarianism easier.

It's kind of like fake fur for the people who like the look of fur but don't want to support the bloody fur trade.

Some causes vegetarians devour false meat... 1. That you would be able to slot in, like for instance, if you're at a barbecue and everybody is having sizzling dogs and hamburgers, which you could have your false meat and now not stand out. This fashion you aren't harming any animals or something but that you can still eat grilled "meat". 2. Some individuals just like the style. False meat tastes a lot like meat, so that method they are able to get the style of meat that they enjoy without killing animals. 3. Due to the fact mock meat is marketed towards vegetarians, it will possibly quite simply appeal to their concentration and as a consequence make them think more "vegetarian"by eating it. Four. Fake meat has just about all of the vitamins and minerals as actual meat, so vegetarians can get the identical amount of protein with out virtually having to harm an animal. 5. They've extra sort via incorporating some form of "meat" into their food regimen (despite the fact that its now not real meat). Additionally, i don't really feel they're "pretending" to eat meat, I feel its only a excellent replacement to have fake meat for the causes above (so they can have extra sort, for dietary motives, style, ect)

This is a good question...and i've been a vegetarian for like a year and a half and vegan for 6 months i thought about that the same question not too long ago. My reasoning is that mock meat still isnt murder. You can look at it anyway you want but when you think about it. There is still no blood on our hands by eating "mock" meat. Therefore, if we eat "mock" meat then we havent killed anything. We are still vegetarians and vegans but with less guilt. Truth be said is that it isnt meat. It is a mock form, sure, but it isnt meat.

Personally, i eat it for protein reasons and variety. Never heard of mock fish and duck)

Some are vegetarians for health reasons. Mock meat is much healthier than real meat.

Other vegetarians ate meat for years and have trouble adjusting so they eat the mock meat once in a while to help adapt.

My understanding is that this comes from the Buddhist Monks and their desire to make a living by cooking for their communties. They were vegan but their clientele was not so they found ways to make veggie stuff look and taste more like meat. It's an art in a way.

Why people want it nowadays - I know lots of parents do it b/c they don't want so much sat/fat in their kids but kids - who sometimes eat with their eyes want what other kids are having and therefore get a 'hot dog' or burger like their friends.

My kids (15/21) who have been veggie all their lives hate the association to meat but love variety and choice.

First of all, not all vegetarians do eat the mock meats-I find them repulsive. However, they replace a taste and texture that many people were raised on, so whats the harm? You get the taste you are used to, and no animal dies in the process. It makes it easier to transition to a healthier, more humane lifestyle without sacraficing flavors and tastes that are familiar. I prefer good ol' veggies, grains and beans, but see no issue at all with someone finding a suitable substitute for an ingredient they were raised on.

some motives vegetarians consume pretend meat... a million. you could slot in, like as an occasion, while you're at a fish fry and all human beings is having warm canines and hamburgers, you've your pretend meat and not stand out. this manner you're no longer harming any animals or something yet you will consume grilled "meat". 2. some human beings merely like the flavor. pretend meat tastes lots like meat, so as that way they might get the flavor of meat that they get excitement from without killing animals. 3. considering mock meat is marketed in the direction of vegetarians, it may rather attraction to their interest and hence lead them to sense greater "vegetarian"with the aid of ingesting it. 4. pretend meat has very almost all the meals as actual meat, so vegetarians can get the comparable quantity of protein without actual having to break an animal. 5. they have greater form with the aid of incorporating some form of "meat" into their meals plan (even nevertheless its no longer actual meat). additionally, i do no longer in all probability think of they're "pretending" to consume meat, i think of its in basic terms a competent selection to have pretend meat for the justifications above (so they might have greater form, for nutritional motives, flavor, ect)

Because many of them used to eat meat and they still like the texture.

So making soy bean or whatever resemble a meat product is the same as killing animals? How so?

If you eat gingerbread men or lady fingers does that mean you want to be a cannibal?

When I was a kid, I used to eat cookies shaped like wind mills. I can't imagine trying to eat a building for real.

The eating of a fake meat is much different that eating actual meat. No animal has to die in order for a boca burger to be produced. I am against the cruelty behind the production of the meat and the health concerns regarding the consumption of meat.

Since faux meat is healthier( in cholesterol, saturated fat, etc) and there is no cruelty involved, than the consumption of the product is no different that eating any other vegetarian food.

I myself, liken it to a person who is watching cholesterol who switches from regular bacon to turkey bacon. Should the person avoid turkey bacon because regular bacon is high in cholesterol... no, because what they are looking for is something healthier, just the same as vegetarians are looking for a cruelty free and healthier alternative so they choose faux meat

Because nothing died to make these plates. I could understand if you were asking why because we supposedly don't like the taste, but many vegetarians were raised on meat, and out friends/family eats meat. We were very used to it, very accustomed to eating meat in almost every meal.

Just because we gave it up doesn't mean we don't miss it. Especially when we gave it up for reasons other than we didn't like the taste. I loved red meat, and now I love Boca Burgers because they taste great to me and I also know they are cruetly free.
