Take it easy is rule one. The very best thing he can do is walk. Not knowing what his condition is that is all I can say. His doctor should be able to tell him what his limitations are.

Take it easy is rule two. Don't try to get fit in a day or a week. Go for a walk everyday, it does not have to be fast. If my angina kicks in, I stop for a few minutes and take a nitro. Then I can continue.

Take it easy is rule three. Skip the weights unless your doctor has cleared it and the dumbbells under 5 lbs unless advised otherwise.

If your hubby can get into Cardiac Rehab, I HIGHLY recommend it. They monitor you while you exercise and tell you when you are doing too much or not enough. It's an outstanding program, worth it's weight in gold.

Edit: PS if he cannot carry on a normal conversation while he is walking - he is doing too much and it can damage his heart.

walking; gradually increase the amount over time. Also put him on a low fat diet and teach him deep breathing exercises to increase his lung capacity and how to stay calm when an episode ocurs. In this way he can even decrease the number and severity of episodes. Be careful about doing yoga as for some people this can make angina worse (as you are slowing down the heart rate and reducing oxygen intake so the heart then does not get enogh oxygen) ; but I do stress for some people not all.

He should be starting with easy exercise, and do a gradual warmup to a pace he can maintain without any pain or shortness of breath. To start, it might only be slow walking for 5 minutes. As it gets easier, he can go a little longer, or a few more times a day, then a little longer again, then a little bit faster. Gradually doing more and more.

Walking or exercycle to start. A heart rate monitor will allow him to check his pulse very accurately, so he can see his heart rate starting to rise before he can feel it. That signals a time to slow down, at least at first. Its no fun to be exhausted from a weak heart, and feel even worse trying to improve.

Walking at normal pace is strongly recommended, (not jogging).
He MUST keep his nitrolingual with him.
In case of Angina STOP and REST, if necessary take sublingual nitrate e.g Angised OK.
Avoid risk/precipitating factors e.g. smoking, cold weather, mental stress, etc.
Take Aspirin (e.g. Ascard 75 mg) daily.
Yoga is much better, about Exercise your Cardiologist is the best judge as he is well versed with your husband's cardiac status.

Walking - just lots of it. Maybe try pushing a bit, but certainly ask the doctor to explain in detail what is and isn't suitable. Whatever, fresh air is good, so avoid inside walking treadmills.
Good Luck.

Brisk walking or jogging to the limit of tolerance and surely not overdoing it. It helps neovascularization in the cardiac muscles thus improving the blood supply.
Good luck!
