I want to become vegetarian, but I do not know how to explain it to my mom. I know she probably won't let me, but I've seen disturbing Youtube vids about what goes on at factory farms, and I've confirmed that they are too disturbing by looking on a dream site.

According to the site, dreams about tidal waves means that something is too overwhelming. The only solution there is for me not to think about the videos too much is for me to go vegetarian. I've been having dreams about tidal waves a lot. But I do not think my mom will let me. And I'm worried what she's going to say about me seeing those videos. She has never yelled at me for watching anything graphic, but I never have watched anything too graphic.

Any advice?

Try a site thats well respected and informed, something like www.vegsoc.org

This is the Vegetarian Society and they have some great information packs for new, and young vegetarians. They also have a pack for parents so they can understand.

Why tell her you have seen those videos ?

Get the info packs, read them, then tell her you want to try being a vegetarian.

Tell her how you are going to help do the food shopping and cook so she won't think it wil be a burden on her.

You can 100% IGNORE detracting comments like part of the above that say "protein is hard to come by", they have no evidence or logic to proove this. Its all nonsense from people who normally have never even been vegetarians. You will also see and hear things like "you need meat", "you need supplements" etc, all untrue.

Get the info packs and learn so you can confidently ignore those that are not basing thier comments on fact.

I am a vegitarian too. Its a great thing! You feel great, you are healthier, and you arent killing and putting others in pain just to eat. Explain to your mom that. And who says you need her plessing! This is a great way to show your mother you are growing up, and you can make your own decisions. What you are doing is right! Explain to your mom how animals have feelings!! They feel just like humans! When you are eating an animal, it is like eating a friend. Good luck!

p.s. try and make your mom a vegitarain, the more the better. Teach her something! But if it doesnt work, atleast you are a good person. Parents dont always know best.

I was a year older than you when i became a vegetarian. My mom did not like the idea of me becoming one. Simply because she didnt think it was healthy and she didnt understand my beliefs about it. Well, now im 16 and she still doesnt understand my beliefs but she does see that it is healthy. She has finally accepted that i wanted to take it to the next level and become a vegan.

The only way that i conviced her...well not really convinced her because she still didnt like the idea. She knew that she couldnt make me eat what i didnt want to and she also knew that it was cheaper to feed two meat eaters than three. After showing her my research. (which consisted of statistics and facts that vegans/vegetarians teens are much healthier than normal teens she agreed) So i say show your mom some statistics...ask a doctor to explain it to her (beware: some doctors arent fond of vegetarian diets)

Yes - first off stop watching "those videos".
You maybe dreaming about being at a beach
but have gotten so much info. that your not ready to assimilate that it is working like a post-hypnotic suggestion. Slowly cut back on the amount of meat that you eat. Until your 18 or 21 you are still the responsibility of your parents.

I wanted to be a vegetarian since I was a little kid. My mother refused to allow it.

I didn't put my vegetarian wishes into reality until I was about 27 years old. By then, my mom couldn't tell me what to do.

You might have to go along with your parent's wishes until you are an adult. But I guess that depends on your parents and what kind of communication you have with them.

Discuss the health issues and how healthy it is to become vegan. But do so gently, so it doesn't appear as if you're blaming her for poor dietary choices. Check out the following sites for support. Ask her for her support, making it like she's "helping you".

Good Luck!

It sounds like your mom is controlling? How old are you babe? It sounds like you are starting to break out of the norm and desire to become your own person, and whether your mom likes that and can handle that is her own problem. No one can make you do anything.

You're in school - write a report about why you wanna do this, the benefits and put it in a binder and explain to her this is what you are doing, you don't need her permission. She'll admire your candor.

then educate your mom another way, go to the library and get a book, and read it, and sit with her and give her the highlights. If you feel you need to educate her in order to attain her compliance here this would be the best way to go about it, often people, especially parents, will say no to something like this, simply because they do not know enough about it, so, give her the basics, and she will see for herself hopefully, once she has agreed, you can learn more and more together. good luck

People are omnivores; we eat everything. The greater the variety of things we eat the better our health will be. Protein is harder to come by if you don't eat meat. While protein is available in vegetables, not all types of proteins are there as they are in meats. Becoming a vegetarian is not a decision you should make lightly. Furthermore, you will be less likely to find restaurants that cater to a vegetarian.

If you insist on giving up meats, you can still ensure enough protein as a vegan, a semi-vegetarian who still consumes milk, cheese, and eggs. Below is a link to one vegan site about protein; however you should research this subject before committing to the change.

One final thought, are you capable of cooking ALL your own meals? If not, you are asking your mom to make two meals every time she cooks: one for you, and another for the rest of the family. That is an unrealistic expectation.

Talk to your mum about the videos. If they are as graphic as you say they are she might want to become a vegetarian too.

Good luck.
