Burn more calories then you take in. I don't know how much you weigh, but I weigh 125lbs and if I wanted to maintain my weight with my type of lifestyle, I would have to consume a little more than 2000 calories a day... If I wanted to loose weight I might decrease my caloric intake to about 1650-1700...(all while exercising regularly and eating the right kinds of foods) And I would really try to never get less than like 1500 a day...
Please though, Do some research on what someone in your position(meaning your age/height/weight/level of exercise/etc.) should do... I am just giving an example of what I try to do. Just do some research about nutrition to make sure you are getting everything that you need to get. If you have the funds then definitely go see a dietitian... they can tell you exactly how to lose weight in the healthiest way possible.
Regular exercise and sticking to a healthy diet should do.
You are a vegetarian?... Eating a good balance of grains, beans, nuts, veggies, fruits, & seeds is a good way to get a well-rounded vegetarian diet.
Good Luck and I hope this helped :]

It's nearly impossible not to lose weight on the McDougall program.
The McDougall program is a vegan diet, with an emphasis on low-fat, whole foods. The basic rules are that you are allowed all the vegetables, beans, and whole, unprocessed grains that you need to satisfy your hunger, but it is recommended that green and yellow veggies make up at least a third of your diet. You are limited to two fruit servings a day. You are to eat no flour products, and to avoid oil and fatty foods (such as olives and avocados) like the plague. Refined soy products are not permitted. Sugar and salt are allowed in small amounts on the surface of your foods, but you are to refrain from cooking with them.

The best thing to do is eat when you are straving and stomach growling, stop when you full. Eat from all different foods. Eat breakfast and stay away form salt and butter. Also oil. Soda can make your bloated, so choose water or100% juice. Take supplelents to increase the burn. Go to the gym but if you work all day, take the stairs instead of the elevaator, dance or bike, working out doesn't always have to be boring.

Talk to your doctor first, fruit and veggie snacks.
Watch your calorie intake to calorie burn so the intake does not exceed your burn rate.

It's more of what you don't eat than what you do eat. =)
