We are having a family dinner party planned in Aug. We are having trouble coming up with a good dinner menu, nothing fancy, but not hot dogs or burgers. Most of the people attening is from Ky. so there can be some southern food ideas, could come in handy. Just had a party June 30 and had pulled pork and hot dogs for the kids. So we want to stay away from that idea, cause some of the same ppl will be attening. And we are pulled porked out!! lol-- A mixture of ages from 4- 70? So all the ideas wold help. We thought about Ham But decided not too!! PLEASE HELP ME, WE ARE OUT OF IDEAS!!! lol

August sounds like a good time for some country style BBQ ribs, corn on the cob, baked potatoes and a good garden salad made with fresh summer grown tomatoes. If you start buying the ribs now a little at a time and freeze them it will cut down on expenses. For dessert, maybe peach cobbler??? To drink, how about a spiked lemonaide for the grown-ups and lemonaide for the kids. Have the kids lemonaide pink so there's no confusion!

Children should eat the same food as the adults - no separate menus - Nor should children's' likes and dislikes dictate the menu - Well, Percy won't eat ____ and Abigail won't eat ____ pretty soon you're running a short-order establishment.

That said, picking food that both children AND adults will eat is key.

Since you had pulled pork etc. the last time - how about:
Grilled chicken - which will allow the children to have drumsicks and adults to eat with forks and knives. Instead of a standard barbecue sauce use a marinade of lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, salt and Italian Seasoning (dried from a jar).
Grilled vegetables (in foil)
Corn on the cob roasted in their husks -
Roast potatoes (wrapped in foil and nestled in the ashes.
Fruit salad - Jello mixed with sliced fruit in season.
Hot rolls (can be brown and serve)

Topped off with angel food cake and fruit compote with whipped cream.

For beverage - Sweet tea and lemonade.

,You should stay away from Southern dishes an instead go w/ a regional favorite. try chicken or hens in local sauce, baked or grilled. The children will love pizza and nachoes. A big salad an homemade cheese dips will add flavor an color. After all, you don't leave Blue Grass country to eat familar foods.

Turkey you can do ahead and keep in a Nesco. Also Italian sausages : pre cook and keep warm in a crock pot or Nesco simmer in spaghetti sauce. I cook Green peppers and onions in Italian dressing to serve with the sausages. Serve with good bakery buns and Mozzarella cheese. Make salads like potato and pasta salads ahead of time . This way you won't have to be attending the stove or grill while your guests are there. For desert make a watermelon fruit salad.

You could make several of these, adjusting quantities to make them thicker. This is a family favourite and it may be novel over there.

Bacon and Egg Slabs
Grease a rectangular oven dish and line with flaky pastry. (I use ready rolled)
Fry off trimmed and diced bacon and allow to cool on paper towels. Place in dish and make wells to drop 4 eggs in. Pierce the yolks and cover with another sheet of pastry. Pierce the pastry several times with a knife for steam vents. Brush with milk.
Bake in a 180C oven for 35-45 minutes until the pastry is golden.
Turn out and allow to cool a little then cut in 75mm squares.

How about a Mexican food buffet. Have taco's to make, taco salad. Toquitos from the store. A big pan of enchiladas if someone makes good ones. Have spanish/mexican rice, some pinto beans, taco meat, taco shells, tostada shells, tortilla chips, tortillas, lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, salsa, cheese, sour cream, chopped onion, etc.

Sort of a "do-it-yourself" buffet.

How about a good old fashioned roast chicken or turkey?

You can serve baked sweet potatoes, buttered rice, spinach, a large salad, corn bread and chocolate cake.
