If you have been placed on NPO (midnight) i.e. Nothing Per Oral prior to general anesthesia, the chances of Inhalation/Aspiration pneumonia are increased, and this can result in table complications. Patients who didn't follow orders have to undergo CPR, including defibrillation of heart, even death.
SO BETTER BE LATE THAN NEVER,in lighter veins.
If at all required due to multiple factors we give the patient a dextrose water 5% i/v infusion (diabetes excluded) about 500 to 1000 ml.

Well, it would depend on what time of the day that you are having surgery. As a rule, you cannot have anything to eat or drink after midnight if your surgery is the very next day. Sometimes, if you are on certain medications, you can take them with a small sip of water. But, your Doc should tell you if this is applies to you.

No you can't. General anesthesia need empty, relax gastric.
The practice of fasting before surgery was adopted decades ago to prevent food from being breathed into the lungs while the patient was under general anesthesia. This problem used to be one of the most common causes of death associated with surgery under general anesthesia.
