The best photos of children are taken spontaneosly, when they are playing or exploring. There is one of me feeding the fish in back garden, and a fish is eating out of my hand!

The poses you have mentioned ARE all the "usual" poses! That doesn't mean you shouldn't set them up and shoot them. The lighting is important, so watch your light direction and use the flash and reflectors as necessary.
I do agree that the greatest images are spontaneous rather than set up. So do both. After the posed shot, keep looking for whatever might happen. Just observe as your daughters do their regular activities, or shoot them enjoying a favorite toy or past-time.
Are you planning to be in the picture with the girls? Shooting from a timer is more difficult than having someone behind the camera. On self-timed shots you will have to set up every pose, make sure the focus is correct, leave a place for you to jump in, then dash to your position. Depending on how old your girls are, they may tire quickly of this routine If you have a remote control, this is a little easier, but better still to have a photographer helper to man the shutter.
Good luck on your photo shoot.

I agree with Thia. All the best photography of people is natural and spontaneous, especially of children. When you start 'posing' a model it all starts to look wooden. If you have a good digital camera and the ability to edit your shots in photoshop or similar, then you have the technical basis for good people photos. I would concentrate on natural environments and situations when your subjects are not concerned about the camera in your hand, then good photos will result :) 'Special' and treasured photos don't usually come from meticulous planning, but from a certain amount of luck in capturing the moment. The more you take, the more likely it is you will produce some work which will stand for years to come. Take a look at flickr for some examples of good photography :)

It's all been done before. You said you and your girls? How old are you? How old are the girls? Are stars all that you're in search of ? All the poses you recommend are all great but I always let the impression of the model inspire me with new ways to pose the human body. I would suggest doing poses doing normal everyday things that you love. A portrait is a portrayal of what a person is or has become or wants to become.

natural poses are the best. try splashing water on each other, having a good time. or an ideal fall picture would be tossing leaves around. also, get a picture of you and your kids playing w/ puppies in a beautiful scenery, like a park
