Define "better"?

I'm a Brit who has travelled to both and, of the two, I would prefer to live in Australia for the lifestyle, the weather, the friendliness of the people etc etc.

Both Aus and the US have cheap food, but wine is really expensive in the US.

Depending on where in the US, be prepared for hurricanes, deep snow in winter and the occassional earthquake. Both countries may get scorching summers and forest fires, but Aussies don't have to worry about the other problems.

And in Aus, you have a considerably smaller chance of being targetted by terrorists, although probably nowhere is ever safe.

I've never been to America but don't believe the lies! Australians are not friendly, it is not the "best" country in the world! Australia is the MOST EXPENSIVE country in the world! Our constitution is not that great and people basically have no rights under our constitution. We have no Bill of Rights.

I guess I shouldn't judge people for what they wrote 8 years ago, but Australia has changed a lot since then in my view...!

Hello there,
I'm an Australian, from Sydney to be exact and currently live in the US.
To be really honest I found both good and bad living in the US and I did feel the same way about Sydney when I was in there. First of all, yes, Australia definitely has a better weather. And I have to say, the welfare and health system in Australia is so good though I used to whinge about it and now regret it. Work wise? Australia definitely more laid back and we have so much more benefits and advantages (think: more sick and annual leave, RDO in some company, lots of public holidays and so on). Australia is so beautiful too! I could be all alone at The Rocks and still enjoyed the surrounding. The beaches, the parks...and the shops of course...I still miss them these days.

However at the same time, I found some ppl in Australia, more so in Sydney, lost their tolerance over time. Road rage and rudeness everywhere because ppl so stressed about their life (high mortgage, increase interest rate, increase living expenses, wages that stay the same and so on..). Being surrounded by these everyday, I have to say my mood went foul as well.

Now to be fair, yes, you probably heard some bad stories about American. And yes again, their health system is so behind compare to Australia.
However, in reality, there are so many ppl wanting to come here to work and live. I do believe, working in America will benefit you, not only in paper (resume), but it helps you to get that better next job once you are back in Australia. I remember my work colleague back in Sydney whose being favored a lot because he had an extensive work experience in the US. Also the fact is, It is so hard to get the working visa here, but if you do get it why don't give it a try? The worse case, if you don't like what you see here in America, you can always go back to Australia or try somewhere else, right? They always looking for new ppl in specialized skills such as IT and Med so I say start researching!

My next piece..probably the most important one....depending where you want to stay in America not all American is obnoxious. I mean..come on...we've seen both bad and good Australian around. I don't live in the big city like NYC or LA though. With this being said, where I live, the general American is so lovely, down to earth and very accommodating. The customer service here is great too. Plus the house price where I live now is still a lot lower than Sydney. Almost everyone own a house here! Well...the lower interest rate in America in some way help ppl to own their home here. Plus the assistance for new home buyer (relative to which states I guess) is wonderful. But if your intention is to move to California or New York...in that case, save as much as money as you can cos it aint cheap there, in fact living expenses is far worse than Australia. You might better off stay put.

And to whoever said pick Australia because we are less fat, come on and get real. Yes, the stats says American have the most obesity rate in the world, but to use that as a deciding factor to move or not to move, its totally absurd. Its all about self control. If you cant control yourself, it doesnt matter where you live, you still gonna get fat!

So there...rather than just say hey pick Australia because I'm Australian, I try to be as fair as I can to both fellow Aussie and American.

Good luck with whatever you choose!

"im deciding to either stay in australia..." - well you are here. Why ask our opinion? You are the one who will either like it here and stay OR hate it and leave.

You can ask and we will say Australia but if you stay because of our opinion but then hate it here, the responsibility of making the decision to stay is still yours?

If you are thinking of moving to the USA then there must be a reason why you want to go (ie something here you don't like) and as another person said, if you want to go there then I guess you don't really belong here.

Hope things work out for you.
