As the last breath of life leaves his lungs, he drops the tomato, which plops quietly to the surface of the still-wet concrete, confusing all onlookers (why was he holding a tomato?)

He dropped from higher than 6ft. I heard the same riddle but with a glass in place of a tomato. Its quite old.

Another reason could be that the tomato was tomato pulp (tomato pulp cant break or bruise). You never said it was a whole tomato.
