We kept all of our duplicates. There was something nice about having a coffee maker go on the blink, and being able to go to the storage room and pull out a new one!
Send a thank you card to every gift giver.

Yes, duplicates may be quietly exchanged. And no, you never mention the exchange to the donor. Just send them a thank you note for the gift that was received.

Yes you just need to note that when you writing your thank yous. Also choose the person closest to you. For example if you MIL got you a toaster and your second cousin you hardly talk to got you a toaster, exchange the toaster from the MIL. She knows you better and that you got mulitples of one item and will be less likely to be offended when you ask for the recepit.

It should go something like this:

Dear Joe,
Mark and I loved the toaster that you gave us as our wedding present. We recieved several toasters and are so happy to know our friends and family are so aware of our needs.

We exchanged the toaster for the blender that was on our registy. We will think of you every time we are making our shakes.

Thank you again for the lovely gift. Your prescense at our wedding made our day everything we dreamed.

The Smiths.

**Ideally you should update and remove an item from the registry once you have gotten it so there are no duplicates. The reason I say to tell them is because you don't know how they paid for it. If they paid with a credit or debit card many stores will have the returned item show up on their next statement

If you received five (5) toasters then you need to return four (4) toasters. Pick out the one that you want and then return the rest for other items that you want or need.

The person who gave you the gift (that you are going to return) should be informed, but do the informing after you make the exchange. When you write them a "Thank You" note you can say . . "I received five toasters. I exchanged the toaster that you gave me for a waffle iron because John and I love homemade waffles on Sunday morning." That simple explanation will eleviate any problems because no gift giver wants to hear that the gift that they gave to you will be moved to your Mother's attic (and sit there for a long time).

Take care of this NOW because your Thank You notes should be sent out within thirty days of your wedding, and no later than ninety days of your wedding. And the person who gave you this toaster is waiting for a Thank You note.

Do not "regift" it will come back to haunt you. People do not like to hear that the gift you are giving them was something that you did not want.

Of course you can exchange them but I wouldn't say anything. The only people who knew I got duplicates of things were the ones at my shower (because they saw) and they didn't mind that I was going to return one of them.

I don't think you need to tell them that it's being exchanged. It's unnecessary info. It's like if they came over to your house and you made them a martini, and they say "is that the cocktail shaker we got you?" then you say, "yes it is, we LOVE it" even if you actually got 5 of them and took 4 of them back.

yes they can be exchanged, but no do not tell the giver. in the thank you note, just say "thank you for the generous gift" and leave it at that. good luck!

exchange them without telling the person that gave it to you. they'll only be offended and embarrased. make sure you write them a thank-you note too.

I think it is fine to take it back. As long as you can work out what store it is from....who needs 3 kettles...4 toasters.....2 coffee makers....etc.etc

Yes they can be. I wouldn't tell them as they will think the one you already have is the one that they gave you.
