i did see many screen captures of xp installation guides which people posted. wondering how they did it.

NO. Since the OS is being installed no functions will work till the installation is done.( an automatic process)
May be done with external camera /video etc.
However you can capture screen shots later with this .ScreenshotCaptor from http://www.donationcoder.com

They used a digital camera and a tripod.

But, it's easier just to get these kinds of screenshots from the web.

I wonder too... but I guess the easiest way is through Digital Cam, but remember to turn off the flash mode...

can you not use the print screen button?
then open paint and choose edit then paste?
