depends on a number of things... how does he feel about you? if he really likes you then there is no way of avoiding the heart break thing, if he doesn't then go for it. either way you need to do what is best for you.

just tell him its not really workin and say it softly so he knows that you dont want to break his heart and he should understand that you care in a way that you guys can still be friends

Be honest and break up with him. Thats the only thing you can do...Leading him on and doing it later will only make everything worse..AND..make you feel bad as well
