In the 1960s, expatriate Australians in London, including Richard Neville and Barry Humphries, started a satirical magazine called "Oz". One of the popular features was a comic strip, The Adventures of Barry McKenzie. The magazine was taken to court over the Schoolkids issue in which the articles were all written by schoolchildren. If I remember correctly, the editors were charged with publishing pornography and sedition. They were defended by John Mortimer, the creator of Rumpole of the Bailey.
The name of the magazine stuck as a casual name for Australia and has been used for forty years now. David Williamson wrote a play about Sydney which he called "The Emerald City" which plays on the Oz idea.

The pronunciation of Australia is "oz-stray-lee-ya", right?
Peops in Oz are Ozzies. Don't matter if you're from Tazzie or Brizzie, Auzzies like abbreviated lingo more than mozzies.
