I'm curious to know if the Christians who are so adamant that the Pledge of Allegiance contain a reference to God would mind if "Allah" were substitiuted for "God". After all, Allah is simply another name for God, so there should be no problem, right?
Of course, if Christians object to this, perhaps someone could explain the nature of their objection? Surely it couldn't be that Christians are against freedom of religion--like they claim so many others, such as Atheists(I'm one) are--right?
Anyone and everyone is invited to answer this question.

In case anyone's curious, I'm as WASP as they come, was raised Christian(although I'm obviously not one anymore), and am certainly not a partisan for any other religion, or any other nation or culture. I take the Christian culture and mindset to task because it is the one I am familiar with. I hope that someone can see how damaging it is to allow preference to one dominant culture, to the detriment of freedom in general.

But this is a "Christian" nation, they will say. THEIR religious belief apparently deserves preferential treatment.
Oh, they support freedom of religion alright... everyone is free to follow the dictates of THEIR religious doctrine. Lucky us!

i've got not got stable perspectives in this (i'm from the united kingdom) yet I nonetheless think of the respond is immediately forward. the U. S. became in keeping with freedom of religion and separation of church and state. for sure perception is substantial in an excellent variety of peoples lives however the government shouldn't coach or require favouritism or adherence to any particluar theological point of view. One united states of america based under God became not an expression used till Lincoln's Ghettysburg address the place he efficiently rewrite historic previous. So why require is in the pledge of allegiance? And why require a pledge in any respect? Is it legally binding? Are you allowed to lie in the plegde? How would everyone understand? Why do you may unconditionally help your government? What in case you do not believe the givernment? You don;t get to %. the place you have been born inspite of each and every thing....

It is a pledge to the United States of AMERICA. You say what you want in your country and we will keep God in our's!
If you are an athiest it's your decision. You don't have to say the Pledge of Allegiance, you don't have to read the ten commandments on someone's lawn, you don't have to go to church or even look at one, you can turn away if someone prays for you. Our nation isn't broken so don't try to fix it with your rantings!!

I don't know.
I am a Christian, but I think that the phrase "One nation under God" breaks the commandment "Thou shall not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain."
Why Christians would fight to keep it is beyond me.
Just to clear things up. The reason it was added (in the 50s) was to distinguish us from the "Godless" communist enemy. Cold war thinking. Not fundies.

God is the correct english word for the supreme being, and that's why the words "under God" were added to the pledge.
The Saudi's can add "Allah" to their pledge, if they like.

The ones who built this country and gave us our rights put God in the pledge. This is a country under God and we should have respect and leave God there because that is what they want. We are 50 states under God. That's how it's always been. That's how it started. and that is how it will stay

*Ahem*. "Christianity is more better", as my redneck friends would say.. Oh, and it's because they think that this country was founded on Christianity, and that Christianity is the only true way, condemning the other 2/3 of the globe to burn in hell. Yay for hatred!

I'm a Catholic against God being in the Pledge of Allegiance and on our currency.
I hate linking, but I don't feel like retyping it all.
