This is actually a common question for new believers.
1 John 5 answers this question "These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life."
Basically, we know we are really saved because (1) we believe Jesus is the Christ, (2) we have a desire to love God and others and (3) have a desire to practice righteousness, to do right. The Holy Spirit will bear witness within us, changing our desires. He teachs and guides us, helping us to do His will in our lives as we grow in our walk with God.
Your faith in His word, which says that you are now saved, will prove itself out as start to live the new life you have in Him. What does the Bible say about this new life?
That you are now a child of God - 1 John 3:2
That you have been made the righteousness of God in Christ - 2 Cor 5:21, Rom 10:1,4
That you are now a new creature in Christ - 2 Cor 5:17
That you are now a son and heir of God - Gal 4:7
John 3:36
"He who believes in the Son has eternal life..."
We know, because now we know Him... and He has touched our hearts, and changed our lives.
1 John 4:19
"We love, because He first loved us."

John3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (KJV)
Romans8:38-39 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
(KJV)
Galatians2:20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

2Co 13:5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?
AND
Rom 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
Rom 8:10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
Rom 8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
Rom 8:12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.
Rom 8:13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
So, to be Christ's (have salvation), you have to have the spirit of Christ within you, and mortify the deeds of the body by denying the lusts of the flesh (read the previous verses in the chapter). OK, how then is the spirit attained?
Mar 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
Ok, you need to believe and be baptized, but still, where is the spirit given?
Joh 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
Joh 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
Joh 14:17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
Joh 14:18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
Joh 14:19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.
Joh 14:20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.
Joh 14:21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
Joh 14:22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?
Joh 14:23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
Joh 14:24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.
AND
Act 8:14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:
Act 8:15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:
Act 8:16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
Act 8:17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.
Notice in verse 16, that they were BAPTIZED, yet THE SPIRIT was not given until the laying on of hands. Ie water baptism followed by baptism of the spirit. Read Acts 2:38 for the purpose of water baptism AFTER CHRIST ASCENDED.
Act 8:35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.
Act 8:36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?
Act 8:37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
Act 8:38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.
Act 8:39 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.
Yes, absolutely, is the baptism referred to literally water baptism.
Already, according to Christ's words in John above, the spirit comes from keeping his commandments, and as we see clearly demonstrated in acts, through water baptism and the laying on of hands for spiritual baptism....... (unless a man is both born of water and spirit...) do you see a problem with the romans road yet? There seems to be some doctrinal potholes. Anyway, what commandments are these? Example is given in scripture:
Luk 10:25 And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
Luk 10:26 He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou?
Luk 10:27 And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.
Luk 10:28 And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.
1. Love your God with all your heart, soul, strength, and mind.
2. Love your neighbor as yourself.
What is then the love of God?
1Jn 5:2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.
1Jn 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.
By two scriptures is it clearly stated what the love of god , as well of the love of our neighbor is, and both mean the same thing. Keep Gods Commandments.
The first four commandments teach you how to love god with all your heart, the last six how to love your neighbor as yourself. They are SUPPOSED to be written in every believers heart.
If you have done all of these things, then you have are presently saved.
Mat 24:8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.
Mat 24:9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake.
Mat 24:10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.
Mat 24:11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
Mat 24:12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
Mat 24:13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
If you shall endure until the end, you shall remain saved.
I know quite well that this doesn't match any currently accepted doctrine according to salvation. However, I also believe Christ to be faithfull and true, and that his words are not lies, neither were the acts and teachings of his apostles falsehoods. I hate to be so blunt, but we see the words of Paul used every day against both his saviour, and his fellow apostles, as if he were our saviour and not Yahshua (Jesus). This is frustrating, saddening, and wrong.
