Companies such as Carfax charge money for this service because it costs money to do the research and locate this information. They have a right to charge for this service. You're not going to find the same information for free anywhere else.

Why would you need to do that? The VIN number is on every car made. Newer cars have it just inside the windshield on the drivers side. Its visible from just standing on the outside of your car and looking inside the windshield. If you have an old car and I mean very old car contact the highway patrol. Thats what they do. Check vehicles.

The vin number is on a small aluminum strip on the dash board, in front of the steering wheel. It is also on the "pink slip" in California registration papers. I imagine it is also on the ownership papers of other states.
