The Methodist church records Smith 'applying' for membership, but was not actually a 'member'. He was apparently a 'passable exhorter", or the guy who when door to door of the members and related what the preacher had said.

But real people do not accept what the Book of Mormon says because it is invalid. Fawn Brodie was the niece of President David O McKay, so her sources are closer to the original than yours.

Right, Aloha?

Verses 5-20 leads up to, and includes, the First Vision. In particular verses 7 and 8 happened the same year as the First Vision (1820) but before he put the words of St. James to the test. Note the wording of verse 8 - "my mind became somewhat partial to the Methodist sect, and I felt some desire to be united with them;" Joseph Smith Jr never was baptized into the Methodist sect.

The book by Fawn Brodie is a work of fiction and will never be accepted by LdS as a reliable source.

properly, your quote is from almost 40 years after he died. it incredibly is the only source to even propose that he joined the church. the only one. He investigated the Methodist church previously he had his First innovative and prescient, yet he in no way joined. His call isn't in the club information from that church on the time. So curiously to me as though the guy who mentioned that isn't have had authentic intentions or had authentic counsel. He did attend the Methodist church each from time to time, although. i understand that he went some cases mutually as he replaced into residing in unity to make Emma Hale Smith's father like him extra. yet there is not any evidence outdoors of that one quote that he ever joined the Methodist church. you're making a good element touching directly to the coolest account of the 1st innovative and prescient no longer being written till 18 years after it got here about. however the version is that the account replaced into written by using Joseph Smith himself-- the quote you gave us wasn't. It replaced into written by using a guy whom I doubt even knew Joseph many years after Joseph died. whilst coping with issues that don't come rapidly from the guy themselves, we've to be careful in finding out how common they are being.

Actually he didn't join the Methodist church, he was made to go by bride Emma and her parents. He visited the church, but he never became a member...and actually crossed his name off the rolls for that day.

I'm sceptical about your date, but I quote:

7 I was at this time in my fifteenth year. My father’s family was proselyted to the Presbyterian faith, and four of them joined that church, namely, my mother, Lucy; my brothers Hyrum and Samuel Harrison; and my sister Sophronia.

8 During this time of great excitement my mind was called up to serious reflection and great uneasiness; but though my feelings were deep and often poignant, still I kept myself aloof from all these parties, though I attended their several meetings as often as occasion would permit. In process of time my mind became somewhat partial to the Methodist sect, and I felt some desire to be united with them; but so great were the confusion and strife among the different denominations, that it was impossible for a person young as I was, and so unacquainted with men and things, to come to any certain conclusion who was right and who was wrong.

He didn't join the Methodist church. He TRIED to join a Methodist SUNDAY SCHOOL, but they wouldn't let him.
