Ok, let me clarify a bit. Accordingly, when a gene is wired to turn you into something you don't like(e.g. criminal) what can be done about it? I think its called predisposition.

We all have predispositions, they aren't completely determining factors. Our will can change many things. Our actions have to be taken into account. Not everyone predisposed to addiction becomes addicted. Precautions can be taken. Knowing you have certain genes will help people a lot in the future. For example if someone is genetically predisposed to diabetes they can start preventative action to delay the onset. For alcholism they can practice careful moderation knowing their genetic weakness in that area.

Predisposition is not 'caused' by genetics. Consciousness itself defines predisposition, as well as everything else, including the conceptual manifestation of an apparent 'cause' which is what genetics is. Some refer to this predisposition as karma.

It cannot be escaped.

Genes determine our physical bodies. Our minds are determined by our environment and our reaction to it. The brain is constantly rewiring itself, creating new neural pathways. If it were only genetic there would be no change in the world anywhere.
You can "escape" from it through independent thought.

Yes, the whole *nature versus nurture* debate.
I think it became a bit moot.
Here is a small primer.

If you think about it the black and white views are not a good way of seeing the world. You can not escape being what you are, but that does not seem to have as much effect as people think on what you can become.
Development is not about escaping your genetic heritage but about using it.

smoking can alter some of the genetic code (thus causing cancer). and it also helps prevent parkinson disease. before taking up smoking talk to your doctor and see which brand is right for you.

Pray about it. I am wired to be a basketball player (I am predispossed to it), but I refuse to play. You'll find me painting instead.
