Any vehicle is as safe as the driver. If you drive carelessly and wrecklessly then no car is safe. However if you drive carefully and cautiously then yes it is safe. Its not a car, its a truck, its somewhat topheavy so taking sharp corners at 55 MPH would strongly be discouraged.
I rented one a few years ago and I loved driving it. The V6 has plenty of power and the 4WD gives the vehicle the ability to go places that you can't take a 2WD vehicle. However they are not built for severe offroad use.
It seems like the biggest problems that people have with Jeeps in general are electrical related. I.E. electric windows or locks not working etc. Other than that with proper care and maintenance they are quite reliable. Great in the snow too.

I drive an 03 Jeep liberty. MPG tends to run mid twenties on highway and low 20s in the city. I love it, I haven't had any issues with it at all and have taken it on several long road trips across the country to and from college. It's really easy to drive, it has the maneuverability of a car but the height of a van or truck which is good for someone who's shorter like me but also room for bigger drivers like my dad and brothers. You do feel the road more than in a car but for me I wanted something that drove a bit rougher. As far as the noise thing another poster mentioned, the Liberty has a bigger engine than it needs, they took the Liberty engine and started putting it into the Grand Cherokees because the Liberties are overpowered. I don't notice the noise, but I always have the radio on or music playing.
As far as safety goes I've been in a wreck with mine and came out with no injuries and it definitely didn't roll. Check consumer guide, I know some of the years have really good safety ratings in their class. The Liberties are hard to roll, you have to really be trying to get one to flip. It's this big myth people have about jeeps and rolling, really its just the earlier wranglers and cherokees from the 80s and early 90s.
The backseat doesn't have A/C vents if your looking to have a lot of passengers in their, just a warning, but if you aim the front two vents towards the back it stays cool. The folding seats do make great storage.
Just take it for a long test drive and see how you like it. On a side note, at least where I live, it's seen as a chick vehicle. But I also live in South central texas where boys drive trucks and girls drive small SUVs. I have 4-5 other friends who have one and they haven't had any problems with theirs either. Also check consumer guide reports from that year of car, I think the 02 and 03 liberties were recommended from their class for safety rating and handling.

my mother in law has one and has had it since hmmm 2002-2003. She has had it in the shop twice lately for AC and it's had one recall on it so far. One thing you should do is research the vehicle that your interested in. I did that with the Jeep I am getting. Look at customer reviews. I did that. I went as far as looking at recalls and joining a forum. Test drive one. As for safe like some have said it's the way you drive. Definately do your research and then decide. Even if you decide this is what you want you will go onto the lot and have the knowledge of the vehicle and ask questions about it. It does help.

Nothing is safe about a jeep. Look at it. No protection on the sides. Easy to break into. Not a good choice for a lady. And they roll easy.

It would depend on how you operate them. I dont do SUVs. I still dont understand people who dig them. I like my car agile and economic. Get something with a lower center of gravity and a 4 cylinder. You can get a Liberty with a 4, but it will be a slug. Dont go for 4WD either unless you plan to stick to the maintenance and dont mind higher premiums.
Get a car and get off the AMC Eagle bandwagon. SUVs are nothing but raised station wagons. Buy a hybrid and enjoy having more money instead of stuffing it in the tank.

i have a 2003 Jeep liberty ... i absolutely love it!* .... the gas mileage could be a lil better than what it is ... but its not terribly terribly bad .... they do seem to roll easy but .. i hit a patch of ice with mine and i thought for sure it was going to roll over .. but thank god it didn't .... (i even had bad tires on) .. on windy days .. you tend to feel the wind blow you around a lil bit .... but ... its not really as bad as what people think ... i love it!* .. and when i am done with college i plan on buying a brand new jeep liberty!* .. have you seen them? BEAUTIFUL!* .... www.jeep.com to check the brand new ones out ....
