I posted a question a few months back, and received answers that Mary the Mother of Jesus was a descendant of Levi (A son of Jacob).
Is this true?

Now since both the lineages in the New Testament (Matthew and Luke) are those of Joseph, how did those who posted know that Mary was of the tribe of Levi?

Yes Julia D you are correct in that I posted a similar question in which you answered and in which you were rewarded with best answer.

Since no one who gave to me the information stepped forward I posted it again but in a different wording.

I hope that all read your reply for it is very worthy, since those who gave to me are not here to re-inform me.
:) Sam

You posted this question NOT a few months back, but like yesterday or the day before:

Here is my answer, again:

For Jesus's case, it doesn't matter if Mary was descended from the tribe of Levi, or even if she was a descendant of King David, for that matter.

In Judaism the tribal lineage is passed down by the *father*. Not the mother. Mary's lineage is completely irrelevant when it comes to Jesus being the Messiah or not.

What Jewish mothers pass down to their sons and daughters is being Jewish, itself. Not tribal lineage, which is passed down only by the father.

So the only thing Mary would have passed down to Jesus was being Jewish.

He would have needed an earthly father who was descended from King David, in order to qualify (at least on that point), as being eligible for the position of Messiah.

Since both Joseph and Mary deny in the New Testament that Jesus was Joseph's son by birth, Jesus's blood lineage is unknown and doesn't qualify him to be the Messiah.

God is not descended from King David, so if God was his father, Jesus doesn't qualify to be the Messiah either, according to the prophecy God himself gave.

Being adopted by Joseph doesn't count for qualifying for the very important position of Messiah, just as adoption doesn't count for being a Priest - a man must be descended on his father's side from the Tribe of Levi to be a priest, he cannot be adopted into it. It's a bloodline thing.

Same for the Messiah, he must be descended on his father's side from the lineage of King David (not the tribe of Levi). It's a bloodline thing.

This is actually the real prophecy for the messiah, by the way, that he is born in the usual way from a married Jewish man and wife. Not from some ancient pagan mythology of a god coming down and impregnating a virgin. The word "virgin" is a a deliberate mistranslation on the part of the catholic church long ago, and this concept has never existed in Judaism, ever.

The Levites were the priests, and the Messiah isn't to come from that tribe according to the prophecy God gave on Mt. Sinai to the Jews.

He will come from the House of David, which comes from the Tribe of Judah.

And his father will be able to prove his lineage from David - indeed today there are several Jewish families that we know are descended from King David even now, and have the documentation going back to that time.

The genealogy of Jesus given in Luke is that of Mary. You could have found this yourself simply by reading only the end of the list of ancestors.

Nobody really knows anything as far as what happened two thousand years ago. As far as we know, everything in the Bible is fabricated and should be taken with a grain of salt. Consider the possibility.

Why don't you read the Holy Bible for yourself? The answers are in there. Find out for yourself.

All I know is that her dad's name was Joachim (pronounced "Wakeem"), and her mom was Anne.
