I need to have a car because I travel to the outskirts of NYC every so often.....but in NYC....you don't really need a car...Its more like an extra convenience(especially outside of Manhattan) to have one...
My insurance is insanely $$ for the cheapest coverage.....and the gas prices here can delve a hole into your wad of cash...

My worst traffic experience was doing the stupid thing of leaving NYC on thanksgiving day.....It took me 2 hrs to get from LaGuardia Airport area on the Grand Central to the George Washington Bridge (crosses over to New Jersey)
Never doing that again....lol

Yes you can.. The public transportation is really good and expansive.. I have a friend that lives there and we traveled by subway, bus and ferry boat.. It was very interesting and fun, to not have to drive and sit in traffic.. Just let someone else do the driving... He's lived in the city for about 10 yrs and hasn't needed a car unless he goes out of state... You buy metrocards and use those to get around on the subway.. .Way cheaper than having a car...

Depends on where in New York City you live. If you live near a subway station, you can conceivably live in NYC without owning a car. I commuted by subway for 7 years, and for neighborhood errands I have a cheap beater bicycle that no bike thieves would bother to steal.

I'd say that in New York, it's more of a hassle *having* a car. Insurance is insane, parking is awful...

Yep, in NYC you do not need a car to get around. Personally, driving in NY sucks! TRAFFIC everywhere, people everything..id rather walk or bus it anytime.

I find it to be cheaper as well. With the cost of gas these days, if I lived in NY, I wouldn't have a car either!
