I am trying to install Vista (Ultimate) on my laptop. I can install it just fine but when it restarts it's stuck the loading screen and it stays there for hours. I know my laptop is Vista capable, I also ran the "Vista Upgrade Advisor" and it said my system was good for Ultimate.

Can anyone tell me why this is happening? It's been at the loading screen for 4 hours, it can't possibly take that long to install. I installed Vista on a friends computer before and it took like 5 minutes. I have tried both the 32bit and the 64bit. They do the same. And BTW I got the upgrade version.

When you ran the Vista Upgrade Advisor, how closely did you read what it was telling you? It may have said it will work, but you need new drivers for certain components first, or to remove some software before you upgrade. Also if you were doing an upgrade as opposed to a clean install, things like viruses, spyware, adware and other malware could cause the upgrade to fail. I remember when Microsoft released SP2 and thousands of people found that their computers would not boot any longer, simply because they were infected with spyware.

The problem with upgrade versions is that if your Operating System is already unstable, the new upgraded OS, will still be just as unstable and most likely more so. This is particularly worse with Vista, because unlike previous versions of windows where you could still do a clean install and just insert the "qualifying media" in the drive during the install, Vista upgrades forces you to upgrade from inside Windows.

At this stage I would recommend that you reinstall XP, back up your files, re-run the Vista Upgrade Advisor to see if it tells you to remove any software first. Scan for Viruses, spyware, etc. and try again.

No Way an upgrade takes only 5 minutes!! Especially Vista... Your laptop probably sux and is taking forever to load it.. let it go till morning or call MS.. you need at least a newer laptop to run it,and Im talking a P4 model not a P3 or less and lots of ram .. You even know what laptop you have? goodluck and BTW.. shave your head and get a tatoo

You must get the Vista Recovery disks from your laptop manufacturer, to avoid driver problems, NOT a store-bought Vista disk.

BTW, the XP Recovery disks may be ON the hard drive, so Read The Friendly Manual FIRST to find out how to make your own set of disks, if it's not already too late.
