New York City moves faster than any other city in the U.S.. This place never sleeps because it's the financial capital of the world. And because of that, the opportunities here are unparalleled. That's why people all over the world want to come to New York, and that's why New York City is the most culturally diverse city in the United States.
New York City is not for everyone. If you are not strong-willed, don't like living in a fast-paced, crowded city, or not willing to move fast and bust your chops to jump on opportunities, or deal with people of every imaginable ethnicity, religion or creed, New York City is not for you.
As Frank Sinatra says, if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere.
That said, if you want to move to New York, it pays to have 1) a Plan A, 2) some support, and 3) a Plan B. Don't just show up with no idea what you will do, because that is the perfect recipe for disaster.
1 - Plan A - Secure a prospective job before you come here, research where to find a place to live. Make sure you research the living costs so you will be confident you can make ends meet.
2 - Support - Look up good friends you can trust who have succeeded here, and ask them to guide you for the first few months until you can survive on your own.
3 - Plan B - Make sure you don't burn bridges with your folks so you can bail in case you find that New York City is not for you.
You will have to be tough and work hard to succeed in New York. Good luck.

I'm 18 years old. I've lived in Virginia all my life. I'm moving to New York in the fall for college. New York City is the best place for a young artist to move because you will have a better change of surviving the art world and becoming a known artist. Your family is probably worried about your safety, which would be why they don't want to you move there.

Because when youre young you want to be near lots of other young people and want to always be doing something and never bored..and big cities like chicago and new york have those things.
When youre older you might feel different about 'the big city.'
Why wont they let you move, are they afraid youll go broke in nyc, a 'starving artist'?..
There are tons of opportunities, learn about NYC, knowledge is power.. then sit down with them and show them what NY has.. more importantly, show them that youre serious about it all and make them believe youll try hard and wont just slack off etc.
good luck.

Because when you're young, NYC is the center of the universe. And who wouldn't want to be a part of that?
Seriously though, you should sell them on the idea that there are dozens if not hundreds of arts institutions in the city, both public and private, small and large. If your parents believe in your work, it shouldn't be too difficult to convince them of the fact that NYC holds more opportunities for you both as a student and as an artist than the middle of Virginia.

i have been to many places and i have to say there is no place like nyc
sure its dirty and not as clean as we hope it will be
sure the air isnt the best here
sure it can be really crowded
sure it might get crazy
but those are the reasons why i hate nyc..but also love it
i dont think i can live anywhere else
i truly dont realize how much i love ny until i leave it, the diverstiy, the mood, the life..
its not because i live here.
i just love it//

Not sure really.
I never dreamed of moving to NYC..
Nor was Paris in my plans as well.
Actually I have been to 38 out of 50 states in the USA, Ironically, it was not my favorite by far. It was old, dirty, overpriced, crowded and "Thought too highly of its self" Yet, the musuems, art galleries, plays and other venues were fun. Once is enough for me. A first run show, isn't enough worth that. I don't like gray snow. I prefer to ride in a car, not walk twenty blocks, if someone does have exact change. (oh please)
Now Chicago, that's a great place!
If you are an ART student, Chicago or Kansas City have the best in the country. No I'm not kidding...yes Kansas City.
Best wishes.

as a young artist, there is no better place to be. the arts community there will challenge you, inspire you, motivate you, and mold you into a top-notch artist - if you pay your dues and keep honing your craft. Additionally, it is an amazing place for any young person to experience.
follow the other poster's advice about planning.

Because New York is where the money is. Along with Chicago, Florida and any other big, fast growing place.
