My 5 year old golden retriever is chewing up my kids' toys at an alarming rate. This has been constant since they were little. My dog has plenty of appropriate toys of her own. If they happen to leave their toys on the floor, she will snatch it up. She also will go into their rooms to find things to chew. Help!

my dogs do the same thing, just a little less. what we do to prevent it a little more..(btw i have 3 dogs) we close the doors of the rooms when we come out and go in, and when our dogs chew anything up, we spank them on the butt (not enough to hurt them, just enough to scare them)with what they chewed up (if you can)them yell at them and wag your finger! this scares my dogs, and they go settle down with one of us on the couch. and at all times leave out some balls for the dogs to play with, they love them! and empty water bottles with the cap and wrapper taken off, they absolutly love that!

and spanking your dog will not make them stop loving you, only if you abuse them! and they know that you are doing it cause they did something bad!

Our rotweiller "Sugar Bear" loves to play with the kids toys... She's almost 5. So, in a stern voice we tell her "no" generally she drops the toy... Sometimes our boys like to give her their toys "no" generally works... I close the doors to the boys room, which helps if she goes sneaking around looking for toys to chew. . Although, she's pretty good... She somehow finds the little people toys and chews off the heads... !!!!

Bottom line - keep the dog away from the kid's toys. I know this is obvious, but it may be easier than trying to train your dog not to chew the toys. Looks like you have your hands full. Good luck. Dogs are GREAT.

this may sound weird, i got this from a farmer and i used it with my dogs. dogs like your scent or your childrens scent. So get one of your long socks, a old long work sock or two is best make sure it is dirty (let me finish) and smelly (it has your smells on it) you take this sock wet it, make a knot in it, you can tie two together then put in a freezer bag, freeze it, give to the dog, this is great for teething puppies also, i spend alot on toys for my young dogs, they liked the sock forever, if a pup keep wetting and freezing the sock, an older dog should like the sock, use a cotton sock, if he is chewing toys now, the sock isn't gonna hurt him

Every time you see her going for a forbidden toy, yell "Leave it" in a low alarming voice. After awhile she should learn which are her toys and which are her own.
