fruits are the part of a plant that contains the seed. That is all. One fruit that is even less sweet than a tomato is an avacodo. Another is a pine cone! Pine nuts are actually quite bitter but a pine cone is a FRUIT! Sunflower heads are fruits. Even nuts (before you remove the outer husk) are fruits! Pea pods and string beans are fruits. Get the idea? It is a fruit if it contains seeds, inside or out, not because it is sweet.

Fruit isn't catagorized as fruit because it tastes sweet. To tell the difference between fruit and vegetables all you have to do is see if it has seeds. If it does then it's a fruit. Oddly enough, tomatoes aren't the only fruit that people think are vegetables. Squash (pumpkin, butternut, etc.) is also technically a fruit.

a fruit is not required to be sweet. a fruit is simply the part of a plant/flower where the egg/seed is stored. the fruit is kinda like a protective covering for the baby plant. im not exactly sure then what qualifies as a veggie. fruits, however, are not classified according to their characteristics as a food but rather as what they naturally are-- and they naturally are pieces of members of the kingdom plantae.

They grow on a tree so they're a fruit. It doesn't matter if it's a sweet. Why don't you question the lemon on why he's sour?

Tomatoes are a fruit because they have seeds on the inside ( all fruit has seeds on the inside , except Strawberries ) if you want sweet tomatoes just add a spoon fullof sugar is you want them sweeter.

fruits are not necessarily all sweet
whether something is a vegetable or a fruit is determined by whether it has seeds or not
a tomato has seeds and so it is considered to be a fruit
something without seeds would be a vegetable

Neither are lemons, limes and grapefruit, but I would assume that you would agree that THEY are fruits. Maybe that is where their name citrus fruit come from. Where is it written that fruits must be sweet.

They have a lower sugar content, that's all. Other fruits include all squash (zuchinni, cucumbers, butternut squash, pumpkin, etc.), bell peppers, pickles, beans, nuts, avocados, and other things you wouldn't expect. There are also sweet vegetables, like (of course) carrots.
