If they do get involved, they lose their tax exempt status. Report any church that is attempting to sway votes or strong arm their members.

No it isn't a good question. A good question would ask why any special interest group receives this benefit! Yes, churches enjoy non-profit status, but so do thousands of other non-profit organizations including the Red Cross, the Salvation Army, The NRA, the ACLU, the NAACP, PETA, AIDS.org, and many more!
In fact, the only group on this list that really has a strong legal foundation for receiving tax concessions are churches...separation of church and state works both ways.
...and then there is the little problem that most churches (talking about individual churches not denominations) don't operate at a profit...what they don't pay out in expenses, they donate to other charitable organizations they wouldn't owe any taxes!

the church I belong to does not practice politics. We have people of many different political persuasions.
If individual members want to get involved in politics though that is their business. They have that right.
On a side note, there are many tax exampt groups that get involved in politics. Charities, greens, gay and lesbian groups, etc.....
