My guess is that it helps their faith. To isolate themselves from the rest of corrupt society is to better attain enlightenment & salvation.
Make the time to visit the Temple Square in Salt Lake City. If you ask one of the many converts from around the world, they'll tell you that they're only allowed two phone calls per year back home.

The group commonly known as Mormons aremembers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) ... The group known as (FLDS) Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints are a seperate group... Members of the FLDS sect sometimes live in compounds such as the ones found in Hildale, Utah and Colorado City, Arizona..
Mormons of the LDS sect live in houses, apartments, trailers, etc. just like everyone else...
A Ward is a geographically designated area.. For instance from 43 ave and 75th ave from 3rd street to 36th street..(randomly chosen streets) All area inside those boundaries could be a ward.. That ward would meet at a designated church building at a designated time for their meetings...
A group of wards is a Stake..
Think of it like this. In terms of division it would be like Ward = county or parish(for those from Lousianna) Stake = state Region= country and the church as a whole = the world...
A ward is lead by a Bishop.. A stake is lead by a Stake President.. A region is lead by a designated General Authority and the church as a whole is lead by the President of the church Gordon B. Hinkley at present...
Similar divisions can be found in most churches or other large organization (For instance the catholic church has a single church, the dioscese, and so on..)
Living in a ward does not mean one lives on a compound or in a certain fenced in area it simply means your home is withing geographic boundaries (usually a street, river or other steady geographical marker is used for ease of communicating where the boundaries are..) Ward boundaries are always changing as people move in and out of areas when a ward size becomes too large or too small a ward can be split (often this means realligning boundaries for an entire stake and creating another ward) or a ward can be eliminated (also often involves realligning and entire stakes ward boundaries) Most wards incompass about 200-300 active members (each sunday a ward clerk counts the number of people in attendance at the meeting) when this number is 300-350 on a regular basis the ward boundaries are usually realligned..
HBO's show Big Love is pretty good just remember it is entertainment not a documentary and artistic lisence is often used in order to provide entertainment..

Well, if you're going to have sixteen wives, you'd kind of have to live in some sort of compound, wouldn't you? People that do this sort of thing seem to buy a lot of trailers and pull them on to the same lot, and then build a fortified tower with an upside-down American flag flying from it or something.
That's not what Mormons do, however. They have regular families, just like everyone else, and they marry one wife at a time. There are some small sects that consider themselves to be Mormon, but they're not main-line LDS members and would not be accepted into the Temple or the other parts of the Mormon Church.

Okay the mormons of Big Love are fundamentalist mormons. They still practice polygamy and are therefore ostracized by the general public. There are fundamentalist mormons throught the country and in Canada, not just in Utah. The Big Love polygamists also live on the compound because they depend on each other for everything in their lives.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS or Mormons) don't practice polygamy and haven't since the 1800s. They live normal lives all over the world, none that I know of live on compounds. The word "ward" is just a synonym for congregation. Mormons call their congregations wards.

The LDS live in the REAL WORLD. The FLDS live in their own twisted world.
LDS don't live ON wards, we live IN wards, which is just a geographical area that has X number of LDS living within it. In Utah, in, say, Ogden, a ward is less than a mile square, whereas, here in Ohio, a ward can take up half a city, or a 50 mile radius of the church building. That's because there aren't that many LDS living within it's boundaries. Most of my neighbors are not LDS and some have never even HEARD of the LDS.

Hey Glenn Beck's my Prophet,
Have you stopped beating your wife?
OK -- I know I have asked an unfair and leading question ... hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Don't live on compounds, HBO knows nothing, Big love is about some other religion not Mormons / LDS.
You need to ask a better question if you want good answers.

I can understand wanting to be out of the city; however, I don't know that you need to live amongst fundamentalists of any sect to do that. Perhaps it's time to find a community where you can fit in and make enough money to live reasonably comfortably. After all, as you've already seen, it takes more than money to be happy, and you can make enough to live on doing something that isn't necessarily a "professional level" position. Look at what matters to you most, and then decide. Good luck!

OK, if you are depending on 'Big Love' to base your knowledge on mormons. WAY OFF. That show is offensive and every mormon I know is offended by it. We dont practice Polygamy. FLDS do. They are a peolpe who left our church and started their own. Mormons DONT live on compounds. We live in houses and in communities with everyone else of every faith and belief. We are part of the community just like everyone else. Wego to school, work and ball games and concerts of our choice, and see movies, and go out to dinner, and yada yada.

Many polygamists live on "compounds" or in polygamist communities. Not all of them do. Members of the largest LDS church, the one with about 10 million members (so they claim) don't practice polygamy, and they are integrated into mainstream society, meaning that they live all over, not communally. Wards isn't where they live, but how they refer to their congregation.

First off "Big Love has very little to do with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (aka LDS Church, and Mormon Church) Polygamy has not been practiced by the church in over 100 years.
As far as the wards go. The Church is divided into geographical areas called Stakes and Wards. These determine where you attend church at. It also helps in organization. The term Ward does not apply to a compound.
If that does not answer your question please feel free to email me and I will do my best to clarify that for you.
