I have 2 dogs I rescued as pups, and have been trying to identify their breeds so I can get a better idea of any possible disposition and breed 'quirks'. Teri has a huge head, shaped like an American Pit Bull's head, and a broad chest. His coloring is like a golden lab, except for a very light dusting of black around his nose and muzzle. He has black splotches on his tongue, and dew claws on all four legs, but the ones on the hind legs dangle loosely. Out of five dogs, Teri is the only one with rear dew claws. He whines a lot, especially when crated, but when he barks or howls, he bays like a hound dog. He has a very sweet, shy, gentle and loving disposition, even towards the two cats and other dogs (most of the time), and usually won't fight back too hard when Ralph attacks him (both have been neutered), but today a scuffle turned more serious and left Ralph limping, with a sore, bleeding foreleg, now swollen at the knee joint. Ralph also drew blood, but it doesn't look as serious.

Some breeds of dogs are born with rear dew claws, some are not. Some (like Great Pyrneese) are born with double rear dewclaws. Some breeds of dogs (like Samoyeds) can be born with or without or with double. A lot of breeders have dewclaws removed shortly after birth.

You need to take control of your dogs. *You* need to let them know you are the boss and fighting is not allowed. Allowing dogs to scuffle to the point there is bloodshed is a recipe for disaster and if not taken care of now could lead to serious injury or death of your dog.

Teri might be part Pit Bull and Yellow Lab. My mother has a dog that was "rescued" from the pound and I figure she is part Pit Bull and some other breed. She sounds like your dog, kind of gentle, shy and loving, and howls when her dog pal leaves to go for a walk. I can't remember for sure but I think she has dew claws in the rear. I have trimmed her nails on occasion. Pit Bulls I understand are really very loving dogs given they are raised in a loving environment and not provoked to be mean. Your dogs are being a little too rough if they are causing injuries that lead to bleeding.

border collies, you dog is a mix, so in that mix is some grandparent who had dew claws. that dusting of black around nose & muzzle could suggest border collie

PS keep them trimmed they grow in a circle, they are a B...to cut once too long and curl into the paw, if doing this yourself and its in the paw you will have to file it down first, usually the dog will let you trim the dew claws or other nails if you start at early age. Some vets say to get them removed, i never did, you don't see them on dogs anymore, i wonder why they have these, must have been a reason

I know that Labs and Pits have dew claws but I am not sure of any others. Mostly bigger breds, that have been bred for protection, have them, at least that is what my husband said when I asked him just now.

Most dogs are born with dewclaws so that's not really going to help you narrow down what breed it could be. The only reason you don't see most animals with dewclaws is because they're usually removed soon after birth.

Most dogs have dewclaws front & back when they are born. They take them off when they are just a few days old usually.
