Canadian French has chat sauvage (literally, "wild cat") for raccoon but it is gradually being displaced by the standard French raton laveur. The Canadian French word is older since the raccoon was originally a North American mammal.

Looking at the animal, it's easy to see why the first French explorers of Canada would have called it a "wild cat." However, in spite of its superficial cat-like appearance it is actually a closer relative of bears, badgers, seals and walruses.
