Just so you'll know, the in the creed the word Catholic is derived, through Latin, from the Greek meaning "general", "universal" . It does not mean the Catholic religion.

The Lutheran Catechism states the same thing, and sticks much closer to scripture. I really liked it, but we were kicked out when we began to use the bible for teaching and actually believe all that it said. Most of them came around when they saw that we grew from a borrowed Assembly of God Church to buying a building in a very short time, by loving people in, one at a time. Even the children brought their unchurched friends. Our pastor used to laugh and say he could always count on my son for a pew of rowdies.[He said it in love.]

RE: 'the one and only true Church'
The Catechism of the Catholic Church expresses the faith of the Catholic Church better than I and more completely than a one line sound bite favored by mass media. You can access the CCC online by going to the Vatican web site or http://www.EWTN.com or pick up a copy - It is well worth the read! Either way you will get your best accurate answer in Article 9, paragraph 3, items I, II and III.
You will find that what was said in the recently published letter to Catholics simply re-affirmed the teachings of the Church that have always been there. Even the wording is the same. I would try to paraphrase but since the recent letter has already done that and the press has already twisted, inflamed and obfuscated that letter your answer would better come from the original source.

The church is not the building, the church is the community of the people. So the true church is the one that follows teachings of Jesus. Jesus wanted to free us from religions, we should have a personal relationship with God. Religions can mess things up.
No, there is nothing that states that Catholic church is the only true church.

In the Apostles creed states "We believe in one holy catholic apostolic church" which isn't word for word what you are saying but all my life growing up as a Catholic it was stated to me verbally that we were the only one true church. We were never given a bible in our Religious Instructions classes, only a religious instructions book that told us about the bible.

816 "The sole Church of Christ [is that] which our Savior, after his Resurrection, entrusted to Peter's pastoral care, commissioning him and the other apostles to extend and rule it. . . . This Church, constituted and organized as a society in the present world, subsists in (subsistit in) the Catholic Church, which is governed by the successor of Peter and by the bishops in communion with him."267
The Second Vatican Council's Decree on Ecumenism explains: "For it is through Christ's Catholic Church alone, which is the universal help toward salvation, that the fullness of the means of salvation can be obtained. It was to the apostolic college alone, of which Peter is the head, that we believe that our Lord entrusted all the blessings of the New Covenant, in order to establish on earth the one Body of Christ into which all those should be fully incorporated who belong in any way to the People of God."268

I was raised Catholic. I do not remember everything in the catecism but I do know we were taught it was the one true church. Of course I don't consider that a bad point since every thinks of their religion (denomination) as the true religion.
The word "catholic" does mean universal or comprehensive.

If there is it is in severe error.
The church is the body of TRUE BELIEVERS IN JESUS CHRIST, not some religious organization.
