I mean I have seen single people who buy SUV's just to use at costco. and it makes absolutely no sense why people love Hummers when gas prices have sky-rocketed and then complain about how much gas they have to buy. Are some people just a Bludgeon for Punishment?

I read a recent article in Car and Driver that analyzed the cost per mile of driving different vehicles. A Toyota hybrid cost more than twice as much per mile to drive than one of the best-selling SUV's. The newer SUVs are not truck-based, like they used to be. They have unibody construction and are much more efficient.

I have a GMC Yukon and a mercury sable.
The SUV i use to tow a large horse trailer and during bad weather.... eg storms in florida.
The sable is to save gas money.... Its a 94 with 70,000 miles on it. I have already saved the money I paid for it because it uses less gass.
Ok.. which do i prefer... The Yukon because yes it is safer. especially when i take my family out.
My wife is a nurse and she sees the road accident victims... and only occasionally does she see an SUV occupant. I guess that anwers the question somewhat...
There is another reason too.. the Yukon and most SUVS are more comfortable than coupes and cars

Some people buy hummers and $75,000 SUVS because they can and want to show it to the world. It is absolutely lame. I have always wanted a 4 runner because I have a toddler, a dog and it snows like hell where I live in the winter, but as far as the hummer its all about looks and being starred at. They suck. If I had 75k I could think of hundreds of things I would buy before a damn hummer. I am definetly on your side.

Your completely correct but there are some reasons why people chose to buy a larger car even if they don't have a family to fill it up with. More protection is a major point, some people have a fear of driving those small Japanese cars in fear of a bad accident, and another reason is that people don't like to buy foriegn cars so they will buy a large Chevy or Ford instead of a gas effecient Toyota or Honda. I wanted both so I bought a Chevy Aveo, and it protected me in my accident

I own an SUV to tow my boat and to haul things. I realize it gets less gas mileage than a compact car and I don't whine about having to spend $100 to fill the 32 gallon tank.

i have a tahoe. it is slammed to the ground. so it cant go off-road. i can still tow what i need with it. i was single when i bought it. i got it because i think it is a great truck. it has plenty of room when i need it. i enter it in car show because it is really custom. no matter what gas cost im keeping it because i love it

An SUV is just a macho stationwagon. Stationwagons are more useful than a car.
