A good cardio workout will require you to speed up your heart rate and your breathing rate for at least 15 minutes nonstopped.
The best exercise to get the most would be running. Running gives you one of the highest calories burned per minute of workout, combined with very high heart rate and fat burning.
Other good exercises include aerobic, biking (especailly uphill), elliptical, swimming.
You must do at least 15-20 minutes to get the cardiac benefit, since first 5-10 minutes is spent to get your heart conditioned to the rapid heart rate. Only after 15-20 minutes do you fat start to be burned and your heart maintain a good pace.

What I found effective is on a treadmill going at a slower pace for two minutes, then a faster pace for one, then a slower for two, and so on and so forth, (something about the burst of enery helps burn calories and fat) if you do this for 30 minutes three times a week, you'll be in top shape in no time. What I really like about this is that this exercise isn't as pain full or as hard as other running.

I am also a turbo jam fan. I have been doing it 5 days a week for 3 weeks and can see results. And it's so fun and easy to get motivated. I have never used a workout video before, but turbo jam made me a believer. I have the two disc set from amazon.

Cardio is not the most effective way to workout and is over rated. Here's a site I found that explains better...

Cross trainers are good, so is boxing. Anything that gets your heart rate up and your breathing to panting stage will be doing the job you want it to.

in my experience the best way is to walk up and down stairs, or if you have a hard objet you can step on step on step off excercises. I use an old speaker i just go up and down and it works awesome.
