My not-a-mormon answer would be that the mormon church does follow the teachings of joseph smith, but not all of them. A later prophet decided that the polygamist idea was no longer okay and banned it from the church. FLDS broke away from the traditional mormon church because of this.
From what I understand, the FLDS version of polygamy is actually rather off from what Joseph Smith envisioned. I'm pretty sure he never envisioned 13 year olds being forced to marry their 50 year old cousins. He also only saw it to be necessary for a small portion of the church (himself included... he apparently married a LOT of women).
Both sects reject alcohol and caffine because of something a later profit said as well. Considering that Bringham Young was a distiller, this is clearly something that came along later in the religion.
ETA: LDS and FLDS both follow the book of Mormon... wouldn't that make them both Mormons?

FLDS are not traditional Mormons, they are a bastardized version.
They do NOT carry on the teachings of Joseph Smith as far as plural marriage. Joseph Smith did NOT sanction that ALL men must marry as many women as possible, to the point of the animalistic practice of throwing the young men out of the pride so there is less competition for the women. That's sick and twisted and I can't think of enough rotten words to describe these people. I mean, I can, but they can't be printed here.
We no longer practice PLURAL MARRIAGE, because GOD told us NOT to, because of the laws that prohibit theh practice and we believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers and magistrates and in honoring, obeying and sustaining the law. In fact, there was a talk about this today in church, and the speaker said, that if we are following the laws of God, there is no need to break the laws of the land. That means, to me, that God DID tell us to obey, honor and sustain the law of the land, and stop practicing PLURAL MARRIAGE.
And the "name Mormon"? WE didn't give ourselves that name, our enemies did. We just decided to run with it. We are not Mormons, we are SAINTS, which is what the believers in the Bible called each other.
And Warren Jeffs is no more a prophet than the man in the moon. He makes Jim Jones look like a piker.

Hey, i'm not really answering your question, but i got best answer on your question about Brigham Young and his 51 wives being "stored" in the lion house thing. I guess i forgot to mention that i'm an ex-mormon, and i was being sarcastic, because (how i answered) was very resemblant to the mormon views of women. Sorry. I really dont think that way, i actually think the complete opposite, and that's why i left. Just wanted to clear that up and you dont allow email so i had to tell you somehow!
I guess i will answer your question though...when Brigham young was named prophet of the church after Jo Smith died, there were a large number of people who disagreed on that choice, and also thought the next prophet should be chosed according to blood line (one of Jo's sons). This caused a splinter group called the FLDS, although the mainstream mormons are still just LDS. They are considered to be the real mormons, but i guess that's up to individual opinion.
As far as polygamy, if you think the real prophet was B. Young then you follow THAT line of prophets who recieved further "revelation" banning polygamy. (This is if you believe Brigham young and all of his following prophets to be the real mormon prophets.) If you think it was the FLDS who are the REAL mormons, then their prophets never recieved this "revelation" banning it, which is why they still practice.
I hope this cleared things up for you!

To clear things up.
Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints do not call themselves Mormon, but refer to themselves as Latter-day Saints. When we use the word Mormon, it's because someone addresses us in that way and it's a word of familiarity, but since you bring this up, the LDS church members are properly addressed and refer themselves as Latter-day Saints.
The FLDS broke off the main church when the prophet banned the practice of polygamy sometime in the 1890s. Not listening to the prophet at that time who was Wilford Woodruff or any prophet up to now is equal to being apostate.
The reason they're apostate is because when Wilford Woodruff was called as the Prophet of the church and sustained by all the members, the members that were against the banning of polygamy did not heed that new commandment and decided to follow another, they questioned the prophet's revelation.
TO RECAP:
FLDS is an apostate sect of the LDS church for not obeying the prophet, and the proper term for a Mormon is Latter-day Saint.

Hmm, never heard of LDS did you mean LSD? The latter is a drug.
Who cares what Mormons do as long as they don't do it to children? When the Mormons start harming children that is when we need law enforcement!

I am a Latter-Day Saint and practice polygamy or as we prefer, "The Principle." The difference is that the Fundamentalist Latter-Day Saints don't allow new membership and their prophet is Warren Jeffs.
