Check my reference link for the exact rules, but I'm almost certain that bringing along a backpack, plus your purse, will be fine. Here are the specs:

Each customer may bring one bag that fits in the overhead bin plus one personal
item (purse, briefcase, laptop, etc.) that fits under the seat in front of you. Your
personal item must not exceed 18"l x 15"w x 8"h in order to fit under the seat in
front of you.

To fit in the overhead bin, your item must not exceed:

* for our Airbus A320: 26 inches length x 18 inches width x 12 inches height
* for our EMBRAER 190: 24 inches length x 16 inches width x 10 inches height

Happy flying!

i guess u can..........i traveled to ny so w/ my daughter many times ( my family lives there) .............and never have a problem.

i took my purse, her baby bag........no prob.
i even took milk and juice for her...once she was sick and they let me take bid bottle of pedia-lite........
i guess if u r traveling w/ your kid, they know u have to take extra things w/ ya......

just let them know if u r taking any liquids and stuff........
