Globally, gas is still very cheap here as compared to Europe.
I understand you may be frusterated, but don't believe the cue card cliches just because they "sound good" or "fit". If it was possible to bring gasoline to the consumer(you and me) cheaper, someone would do it and undercut the big oil companies. Economic competition does us little guys a good thing, thanks Walmart!!
It's tough to swallow but Exxon really only does make about a dime profit per gallon of gas they sell. They just sell hundreds of millions of gallons.
Homework time... Find out how much per gallon you pay in taxes in your home state and you may get mad a someone else.
The oil companies mine, refine, ship, test, research, insure etc. for 10cents a gallon. Your government takes, let me guess, about $2 for nothing.

You dont see the big picture do you.

Every year auto makers make millions of cars
the most popular vehicles sold is gas guzzling SUV's
Hummers are real popular
have you been to a big city lately
people drive these gas guzzling cars 24/7/365
the roads are very crowded
we are consumning fuel at a record pace
refineries are running to speed to meet the demand
the high prices are there to slow down the sale of fuel a bit
it keeps getting worse by the day with no sign of slowing down

Prices are controlled by supply and demand. Right now, the supply is limited, and demand is rising, so prices are going up. If suddenly nobody wanted or needed fuel, it would become as worthless as dirt.

Gas is something that we can't get by without. It is also a fantastic source of tax income for the government. They increase the price because they can.
