That everything has a soul or nothing has a soul...why would there be more importance on one thing having one and something else not having one?

A soul is a body with the breath of life in it, when the breath of live leaves, it is no longer a soul. Genesis 2: 7; Joshua 11: 11; Joshua 20: 9; Psalms 49: 15; Psalms 89: 48;Phillipians 1: 27; just to name a few.

We have a body, spirit and a soul. The body you know about. The spirit is our connection to God. The soul is what makes you, you.

Only humans of religious beliefs would declare that other animals did not have souls. Just a wee bit too sanctimoneous for me.

No... that is not safe to assume... I don't believe that cabbage has a soul.. nor micro organisms.... But even your basic assumption of either/or is assuming to much.

that's kind of creepy. think about a piece of bread having a soul. and you're eating it. inside it's screaming for you not to kill it but you do it anyway because you don't think it has a soul.
*shudder*. i'll just stick with the thought that only creatures have souls.
