First, the Saiga is NOT an AK-47,or even a clone, no more than a Valmet is. It is only similar in appearance. It is barely worth the $400 price tag you quote, especially as there are several like ,or better quality bolt-action rifles in the same price range.
The Saiga in .308Win. (7,62NATO) is legal to hunt deer and other large game ONLY if you have a BLOCKED magazine that will hold ONLY the 3 or 5 round maximum prescribed by your particular State Game & Fish authority.

Some really interesting posts here. First, the Saiga 308 has a flawless action as they are built on the same basic design as the AKM, and have loose tolerances. It will shoot every type of .308 round made with no problems, has a chrome lined barrel, brand new parts, an overbuilt bolt, great accuracy, and the best price in the .308 semi-auto market even at today's price of $650.00. I own the 16" and the 21" versions, and the 16" is my primary deer rifle here in east Texas as the woods are thick and a long shot is 100 yards or less. By the way, at 100 yds., eaven the 16" has 3" groupings which is the same as my Savage 111 Hog Hunter 308. And, here in Texas, we can hunt with any legal rifle with unrestricted magazines, although who wants to lug around 24 rounds of .308 165 grain in the mag.

Find out if your state even allows hunting with a semi-auto rifle, if they do and you have the right magazine ( either 3 or 5 round, depending on state) you shouldn't have any trouble, as long as you can TRUST that rifles accuracy, and YOUR accuracy to humanely take your game.

In most states, you are required to not have more then 3-5 cartridges in the rifle during deer season. (including the 1 in the chamber.. 1+2 or 1+4

JC, unless you live in a shotgun only state, a Saiga should be fine. Check Cheaper Than Dirt, Brigade Quartermaster, Sportsman's Guide and Gun Parts Inc. for five shot magazines.

Ignore the fudds talking down on the gun because the Saigas are accurate and reliable.
And it should be legal as long as your state allows you to hunt with semi-autos.

Accurate up to 100 yards. I have one. Great rifle and cheap good enough for 100yards with iron sights...with a scope and good ammo you'll get better groupings. Should be legal to hunt with it.
