Where did you hear this? NOBODY could take out Russia (actually the USSR) at that time. The atomic bombs were not ready in May of 1945, so do you think we could go all the way to Russia?
The Russians had 10 times more men on the ground at that time.
Actually it was them, who could go all the way to Spain, if they wanted. They were unstoppable in May of 1945.

Or the 70's when Nixon and Breshnev were at eachothers throats.
Or the 80's when Reagan played a game of "Chicken" with Gorbachov, and Gorbachov backed down.
The stuff going on today is baby stuff for those who were alive the last 45 years.
Hell, a big faction of America wanted to go in and take out Russia at the end of WW 2, but cooler heads prevailed.
