I've just bought a new computer and I was hoping for some advice on what software to put on it to improve peformance... I have a virus scan and firewall but that's about it!
Any ideas?

You may want to try adaware by lavasoft. It is a program the will scan your computer for spyware and adware. I find that it will catch things the virus scanners miss. I also recommend Mozilla Firefox, one of if not the best internet browsers out there.

virus scans and firewalls dont improve performance, in fact they generally make things slower. Its the sacrifice you make for safety.
Things you can do to improve performance is removing unnescessary programs from your windows startup and adding more ram.

try tuneup2007 it rocks.
also use CCleaner to wipe clean your os and hd.
