Some say that just so there is no confusion on who we are talking about.

Well, here are the full names for the two...

Ralph Dale Earnhardt
and
Ralph Dale Earnhardt Jr.

So that makes the elder Earnhardt a Senior.

Technically you are correct in that Jr./Sr. is used when the son and father share the same entire name, but I think it is just used in this case to differentiate the two when talking about them. It's a lot easier than saying "Dale Ralph" and "Dale Joe" (or whatever the middle names are).

And even Dale Jr. uses the "Jr.", so I really don't see why it upsets you.

Actually Sr. and Jr.'s, first names are Ralph. So Jr., would be Ralph Dale Earnhardt, Jr. The only one with a different middle name was the father of Sr. Grandpa Earnhardt's middle name was Lee. So Sr. was Sr.

Well, if Dale père was so offended by the Senior, he shouldn't have given his son HIS OWN NAME. That's just asking for people to use Sr. and Jr., or Big and Little, simply for clarity.

And if you're even moderately successful in your chosen field, giving your child YOUR OWN NAME is pretty much guaranteeing that, if he chooses to enter the same field, he will struggle with establishing his own identity. I think it's already pretty tough for the various Andrettis, or Unsers, or Foyts, or Kyle Petty, forever doomed to be compared to their famous forebears. How much worse is it for someone with the exact same name (+Jr.) as his celebrated father?

Yes, I'm a father, and I wouldn't think of giving my kid my own name +junior. It's a decent enough name, I think, but he is his own person and deserves a chance to be treated as such.

Who died and made you the name police? I'll call him whatever I want... by the way do you guys remember back when Dale Earnhardt SENIOR came from the rear of the pack and wrecked Terry Labonte in the last lap to win the race at Martinsville. Then he went on to celebrate with Dale Earnhardt Jr... oh those were good times. Dale Earnhardt Senior, and Dale Earnhardt Jr were such an awesome tandem... good times don't ya think? :)

Would you prefer we call Jr. the 2nd?

It is the way it has always been with families that name the son the same as the father. You have a Sr. and a Jr.

So to sum it up, nope I will always call him senior, and I will always call the son Jr.
