I don't know about you, but the only way I can watch the fights on HBO is by muting the sound. Is he or is he not the most inane commentator in all of sports?

People said the same thing about Howard Cosell back in the day, but the truth is both are hall of fame announcers. Personally I like Larry, but when I met him, he was just as obnoxious in person as he is in front of the camera. Still he can't last forever, and eventually father time will get him. We all got to go when our time is up, and Larry's time is short, so I say enjoy him, because there will never be another like him.

Great guy and a great boxing commentator, if you can get past the blistering personality you will find none better than Larry Merchant.

I believe Larry is headed into retirement after a solid career. I think I read HBO was looking at eventual replacements.

Larry was a heck of a sportswriter/columnist way back when. I'm sure he made the right decision financially to move into TV, but sportswriting misses him.
