I hope all the innocent victims made it to heaven. I was just shocked at how one moment you are living life and just doing your thing and then bam! something horrible and disasasterous happens. May they all rest in peace.

I was on the phone with my girlfriend. She said that a plane hit one of the twin towers. My first thought is that some air traffic controller made a HUGE mistake. Then, 5 minutes later, she called me back and said that another plane hit the other tower. Then it became clear that it was not a mistake and that someone intended to do it.
I went over to her place and watched the whole thing happen on TV. I watched the first tower go down. I watched the second tower begin to sway and then fall. I heard the initial estimates that over 50,000 people had died (this has since been reduced to around 3500). I was the one that told many people on my campus that the twin towers were gone.
By the time I had left for class, it was clear that the Taliban and al Qaeda were prime suspects. I taught a calculus class, but instead I explained about the Taliban, the Cole bombing, and the likelihood of war. We had a good discussion about the differences between the Taliban and other Islamic sects (there was a woman in a hijab in that class). I was very fearful that there would be a backlash against the Moslems in the US.

Well, I was at a business meeting and during a break some people heard about a plane hitting the WTC. I assumed it was a small plane. I figured some people had been killed, but I knew a plane had hit the Empire State Building many years ago and the building withstood it. We went on with our meeting.
By the next break, a TV had been set up in the reception area outside our room and when we went out we could see it. By then the second plane had hit and it was obviously an attack. I couldn't believe how bad the fire was. I felt literally sick to my stomach thinking about all the people who would surely die in the fire and had died in the planes. We all just stared in silence for an hour as the buildings burned and then fell. I grew up in NY and had been on the top of the WTC and it was like I had lost a familiar spot from my childhood. I was thinking of people I might know who worked there. I was really in horror.
I had been so stunned by it all, I hadn't even thought of calling my wife to see if she knew about it. She was at home and had been watching. I hopped in my car and went home and cried. We both just cried.
My kid was in third grade and I called her school. I told the receptionist that it was totally irrational but I just needed someone to tell me my child was okay. She assured me that the children were all in class. That the teachers had been informed but the children did not know. They'd be coming home at the usual time.
It was then that I starting thinking about who could have done that and why they would do it. I had two different thoughts. One was that if someone wanted to take over our country, let them have the f__cking thing. Let them see if they could handle this big MFer. Then I thought about turning a few countries into glass parking lots. Both of these trains of thought were out of anger and frustration and pain.

LOL...Well I was outside Tokyo Japan at a US Air Force Base asleep. It was late at night in Tokyo area. My wife was at the neighbors house and she called me and said..."We just got attacked...It's horrible...There is a huge building down town burning down"...Well my first thought was..."Oh no North Korea bombed Tokyo"...Then I realized that my wife was talking about the World Trade Towers in New York City. The next two weeks I was carrying an M-16 for 14 hours a day helping to guard the Base I was stationed at.

Confusion, not knowing what was going on and wanting to find out as much as I can. My next thought was about my brother. He worked near the UN and for all I knew the UN was also a target.

When I first heard of it I thought "who is stupid enough to fly a plane into a building?" then when the second one hit I thought about how terrible it must be to be in those planes and buildings that day.

I thought it would surely be the beginning of WW3, I also remember thinking the attacks would keep coming the rest of the day in all major cities.
