Cardio is short for exercises that increase the cardiovascular output, which is how fast your breath and the heart works. By increasing the rate of both, you are increasing the number of calories that are burned (used up).

Cardio is short for cardiopulmonary, which means heart and lungs. The term aerobics is also used, which means oxygen. The idea behind doing exercises of this type is to have your muscles become more efficient at using oxygen. For keeping your body in good repair, it is the most important of the exercises. It involves being active for a period of time. Walking, running, cycling, jumping rope and playing tennis are examples. Weight lifting is not.

Cardio is doing aerobic exercise (meaning with oxygen). Your cardiovascular endurance is the ability or capacity of the heart, lungs and circulatory system to deliver enough blood, fuel and therefore oxygen to the exercising muscles for an extended period of time.
