What does the black cloth cover that cover speakers do to the sound? Just to protect the speakers or better sound or what? Sorry for my ignorance... thanks.

Asthetics, some speaker protection, and probably keeps the dust off of it too.

All grill cloths are supposed to be acoustically transparent. If you don't like the look of it, they sell replacements.

Covers For Speakers

Hi there .The cloth is mainly for aesthetics and to offer some protection to the drivers. It should not be used to correct any frequency deficiencies .It should be acoustically transparent, but if you are not sure just remove it.Most of them are stretched onto a frame which presses into the front baffle .I removed mine as soon as i bought them so i would have no doubts if the sound would be affected. If a speaker manufacturer uses them to absorb extra high frequency radiation from their tweeters then that speaker is not worth buying in the first place .They are trying to cover up mistakes in their design.

It might actually muffle the sound slightly, but I doubt it. It is put there purely for estetics and has no sound value. Back in the day, when I was a roadie, I pulled the covers off once the speakers where set up. That gave the audience both the sound and the visual of seeing the speaker vibrate. So to answer you question of "whats the point"...there isn't one in my opinion!

the black cloth on the case of the speaker is to absorb the sound to make it have a more clearer sound. If the black cloth wasn't on the speaker it would have more of a higher pitched sound and would possible vibrate and rattle so much it would be unbearable. Hope I've helped.

Doesn't do anything just for protection and looks.

Just there for aesthetics. Not really any point at all.
