Cat showed up last Friday, won't leave, but I'll gladly keep her, just don't want to spend a lot of money if cat has owner. She also has a limp in her right rear leg, like broken, but didn't heal right. I don't mind keeping her, but don't want a litter of kittens either, as this is a female cat. I purchased some Frontline, took care of the fleas pretty well. She needs to be checked over, have shots, x-ray etc. but is there any help out there that cares about abandoned animals, charities or anything that doesn't put the burden on me? Please help, it's a very loveable cat, but I don't really have the money to put in someone elses animal. Will post FOUND CAT signs in the neighborhood to see if anyone lost this cat, but there are several cats around here, male& female, time is running out, don't need her to have kittens.

Call your local Humane Society/ASPCA and ask them about their low cost clinics and about spay and release programs.
They should be able to help you with little cost to you.
Also, google "your city animal rescue". There will be sites with info or people you can contact.
Help is out there, you just may need to work a little to find it. Keep in mind that most animal rescue organizations are underfunded and short of help, so don't get frustrated if you have to make several calls.
Good luck to you and your new kitty.

There are free or low-cost spay/neuter clinics in most cities, and also similar vaccination clinics.

Animal shelters and humane societies often do similar clinics or give out coupons for reduced-price care at vet clinics.

However, if the cat has an injury and you can't afford to take it to a vet or don't want to because it may belong to someone else, the best thing to do is to take it to an animal shelter or humane society. They might even come and pick it up, since it is an injured stray, if you have no way to take it to them. At the shelter it will get proper medical care and that is where an owner would look for a lost pet.

Thank you for caring about the cat and putting Frontline on her. Dog food really isn't good for cats -- it lacks certain elements such as taurine that is essential to cats.

If you can't afford to keep the cat, get it to a shelter soon. You can still put up signs saying that a lost cat was found and where it ws taken. If you delay her injury is likely to get worse.

If owners show up, which is highly doubtful since as you have noted she has an old injury which was never cared for, then you can claim reimbursement for expenses. Think: if someone really wanted the cat and were responsible enough to try and find her, they would have been caring enough to get her spayed and take care of her injuries with a vet. So why not take ownership? Stop making excuses and get her the care she needs. You can't have the privilege of having something or someone without also taking on the responsibilities. Somebody has to care for that poor, sweet little cat. Don't be like all the other cruel people in her life. Help her!

The only thing to do is call around to see prices for spaying/nuetering, also some pet stores such as petsmart offers shots at a low cost and I think the vet comes in once a week for that. It is still gonna cost to get her straightened out but once its done you should be ok, if you just cant afford it call around and find a no kill animal shelter they will take her in and take care of her and then try to find her a good home. I love cats and I am very happy you took her in just don't give up on her and PLEASE dont just let her go back outside there is such an overpopulation of wild cats and if you let her go she will probably get pregnant and then there will be 5-6 more cats out in the wild.

I called the humane society here and found out they wanted people to do TNR (trap, neuter, spay, release) and had FREE spaying for every cat I broght in (provided it wasn't a pet of mine!). They do it for strays and ferals. I had to have the cats in by 8am, and picked up by 5pm or they'd be euthenized if I didn't show, so they were serious about the rules.

I got a live trap, got 13 cats in to them over the course of 2 months, all outdoor cats. One ended up being adoptable, he was full of burrs, loved people and didn't know what was going on--basically acted like he didn't belong in a cage and would we please let him out (very different than the half wild or full wild ones!). He was adoptable so I left him there. The others were all brought back and released.

It was free--they got neutered or spayed, dewormed, deflead, ear tipped and vaccinated. AND they all got a microchip too. The place did good work. I had to make sure all the anesthetic was worn off, so would keep them in the garage overnight then release them in the morning, but it was so nice to be able to get the kitten population down.

If your shelter doesn't do this, ask if they know of any cat rescue groups that have low cost spaying. Call every vet in the phone book and ask the same thing -- ask if THEY do low cost spay or if they know of any groups that do it. You'll find someone.

many humane shelters offer free spaying and neutering, but a lot of the time, its for adopted animals, sometimes people will have a spaymobile type of thing where they spay and neuter cats

Call the area vets if you don't have any other pets and tell them this story. They may know who can help you in your area.
