It is tiny, but it looks and feels quite odd. It has two colors (dark brown and light brown) and I did have A LOT of sun exposure as a child without using SPF protection.
I've been doing a lot of research and reading online about skin cancer and melanoma specifically, and so far from pictures I've seen, it looks more like melanoma than basal cell or squamous cell. But I've also read that for it to be melanoma, it should be at least the size of a pencil eraser, which mine isn't (mine's much smaller). Should I be concerned and will the doctor take me seriously if I ask him to check it out, or because of it's size do you think this is an ordinary mole?

Well what you need to do is go to a dermatologist to look at it. If the doctor thinks it could be cancer, the doctor will remove it.

Go to a dermatologist and have it checked out. The doctor won't laugh at you. I had pre-melanoma and he just cut it out, and nothing more has ever shown up. My doctor told me that if a mole is flush to the skin (not raised), it could be. If you checked out the literature, then you know that the edges can be ragged and it can have coloring of varying degrees. These are danger signs.

It's always best to see a doctor if you're concerned, or even if you're just wondering if it could be a potential problem. If they don't do a biopsy, they'll probably ask you to keep and eye on it and return if it's appearance changes. You'd be surprised how stubborn people can be about seeing a doctor. They appreciate proactive people so they can stop a problem before it becomes a catastrophe.

If he's a good doctor he should take any of his patient's worries seriously. It doesn't sound like skin cancer though, but a simple mole. It never hurts to get it looked at.

Ask your doctor or dermatologist to look at it. They look at moles all the time, so they won't think you are being silly or anything. It is most likely normal, but it is wise to have it looked at sooner rather than later.

D is a diameter more than 6mm
any of these go see a specialist
