I'd like to know so I can put a stop to it. I keep picking at my anus with my fingers everywhere I go and it's driving me nuts!

People keep asking, "Hey! You going to the show?"

I guess my questions are still too intelligent. I'll try one more...

It actually does sound like pinworms (Enterobius vermicularis). These are actually pretty common. They are usually transmitted by accidentally ingesting the eggs in food, by dirty fingers, or inanimate objects (fomites). Once the eggs are ingested (you can't see them - they are very tiny), the eggs hatch in the small intestines. They then travel to the large intestines, where they localize. They mature and mate. Then the female travels out the anus, and leaves tons of eggs around the perineum with a sticky compound that makes you itch. Then she goes back up inside the anus and does it all over again. The majority of the time, an itchy bum is caused by this. You can tell if you have them by placing a piece of scotch tape on the anus at night (that's when the female lays the eggs) and you will see the little critters on the tape (there are probably some mature ones, but they are most active at night). You don't have to go to the doctor, but I certainly would. If you choose not to, you'll just have to be very careful not to keep reinfecting yourself. Do this by keeping your fingers away from it, and treat everything like you would with lice (wash bedsheets daily, scrub the tub well, disinfect surfaces, etc.), and you should do this after you go to the doctor as well. Good luck, and don't worry, it really does happen alot.

Check your stools for small white worms. Intense rectal itching is a symptom of parasitic infestation.
